STEMY Academy

STEMY Academy is a two-pronged educational initiative that aims to cultivate scientific curiosity among local middle schoolers, particularly those from underrepresented backgrounds. The Part B registration form, open to all Louisville middle school students, can be found here: tinyurl.com/stemypartb.
The first prong of STEMY Academy (part A) was an afterschool science workshop showing students that STEM is exciting. For example, participants explored biology by building edible candy DNA. Part A occurs at Louisville middle schools during the first semester of each school year.
The second prong of STEMY Academy (part B) will educate students about real-world issues that can be solved through STEM. Participants will learn about major problems affecting our global society, work in groups to discuss these problems, and explore ways to address them through hands-on activities. Part B, open to all Louisville middle schoolers, will begin in February and last until mid-March. In the 2018 program, students will explore the topics of Electricity/Magnetism, Microbiology, or Sustainable Technology. To register for Part B, click here.
STEMY Academy provides underserved students with STEM opportunities that they wouldn’t be able to access through school. Our innovative, hands-on approach to education is uniquely able to spark interests in STEM, a field that students often consider too difficult or boring to pursue as a passion or career. Participants will not only learn about fascinating science and urgent real-world issues, they will also build critical thinking, problem-solving, and teamwork skills. Students who join this program can continue to attend throughout their middle school careers. By engaging the same students over the course of several years, we have the capability to make a permanent difference in these students’ lives and in the community.
